Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) (e.g. SafeT21, NIFTY) is a screening test performed during pregnancy to assess the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure that involves analyzing cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) obtained from a maternal blood sample. This test can be performed after 10 -14 weeks of pregnancy (depends on the order of pregnancy).
The most common related tests include screening for Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13), and certain sex chromosome abnormalities.
Although this test has a high detection rate, it does not guarantee a 100% diagnosis of fetal disease. If any problems are found, doctors will immediately discuss further tests with the pregnant woman to confirm the diagnosis. Early detection of any potential risks can help pregnant women prepare for special situations and develop the most suitable arrangements and plans for both the mother and the fetus.
